172 bucks later....

I have one VERY groggy elderly cat set up in a bathroom with his own private litterbox, food and water bowls, canned food instead of the usual dry kibble, a heater for cold nights, and two bath-towel-padded bedding spots (one enclosed, one not).  I figure he can enjoy the last of the morphine in there without being able to hurt himself . . . unless he falls off the toilet or cabinet, which I hope he doesn't even get up onto right now.  I'll have to get the guest room cleaned up so we can put him in there for the duration -- he'll be getting canned food, and the others get dry.  But for now, he gets to stay in the bathroom.  If it's inconvenient for the humans, well, we can just darned well knock before entering for a few days!

I saw his x-ray from last week and it's a good thing we went ahead and did the dental surgery.  He'd lost a significant portion of the bone in one side of his face already, and the bone on the "good" side was showing signs of heading the same way.  He's still wheezing, but that could well be from post-op swelling and drainage.

And we have liquid antibiotics for him, so I don't have to figure out how to open his mouth without pressing on the surgical site.  Oh, wait, yes I do: He still needs his heart meds.  Must call the doc - maybe they come in injectible forms...?

Oh, and about the $172?  The poor old fellow's worth it.  If this gives him a better quality of life -- and maybe even a longer life! -- I shan't regret the expense.

aw, the poor old guy. Once those antibiotics kick in he's going to love you forever! He'll be feeling so much better.
You are a good mommy ;-)

Safe travels for Squid Boy's trip home!

I try to be a good kitty mom . . . but they don't think much of me when I have to pill them.

And thanks for the good wishes for Squidboy, hon! We talked to him tonight and he's trying to figure out how he's going to manage everything at the airport. He didn't get stuff packed up in time to ship it home via UPS (or to have the Navy forward eveything to his next duty station), so he's going to be lugging FOUR loaded sea bags and a big duffle with him, if I recall what he said correctly. I'm just hoping we can fit everything in the car....

As the person of a diabetic cat...$172 is a bargain! Insulin shot twice a day and prescription food. Yea. But, yeah, when he was diagnosed I had to give him a chance. And now, with the exception of generally being pissed off at the world, he's happy and healthy. Of course I had the few in my life were all "he's *just* a cat." Good thing I rarely listen to them anymore!

Glad the kitty is doing better. Odd that he was on antibiotics prior to that but it didn't clear up the sinus infection? Different drugs for different infections I presume.

Update: My poor old kitty-boy is waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge. He died at home on Friday, June 19th. Techgeek and Jezzi (AKA "future daughter") had made it home earlier in the day, so they both got to spend some time with him before he died. And Squidboy was still home on leave at that point, so he got to see him too.

My vet figures that what we thought was a sinus infection was actually an infected *cancer* - which explains why the antibiotics weren't working. He had a good long life; he'd just turned 15. He went from being a homeless kitten to being a loved and pampered pet, which wasn't a bad deal for him at all.

But I miss him.

Dori, I know exactly what you mean about diabetic cats and expense - we have one too! Our vet swears that cat can tell time - when she does a glucose curve on BC, she draws blood every 2 hours, and BC comes to the front of the cage and starts peering around the corner about 20 minutes beforehand, like "ok, it's getting to be time, c'mon and do it". LOL She comes to get me when it's insulin time and gets annoyed if I'm late with her shot. She figured out early on that she feels better after she's gotten her dose, so she doesn't complain about being stuck twice a day. (Good thing, too - we had another one who was temporarily on insulin because of another drug he'd been on, and he HATED getting shots. I'd have to chase him down every damn time.)

I'm so sorry about the kitty! I know it's tough losing them.

I'm actually being stared down right now because *someone* is well aware that it is snack time. And, yes, he knows his shot times and since he gets fed right after he really doesn't seem to mind. He's racking up the vet bills this week though--insulin, syringes AND physical with lab work all in the same week. The sound you hear is me whimpering...
