Thanks to Dr. Chris over at Made A Difference For That One, I now know that the daytime soap opera All My Children has cast Iraqi War veteran J.R. Martinez in the role of a soldier thought to be dead of combat-related injuries, now returned home to Pine Valley and his fiance. There are good articles here and here on the details.
What makes this so cool is not just that AMC chose a real-life wounded hero to play the role, but that on the 6th they aired an unscripted episode where wounded Iraqi War veterans were allowed to tell their own stories, in their own words. I wish I'd known in time to watch it. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll do something similar again.
And yes, I must confess to having been a regular viewer for quite awhile. Performances by the incredibly talented and beautiful Susan Lucci kept me watching. (And when she finally won an Emmy, you bet I cheered!) For awhile, even my dad got hooked on the show. The (mis)adventures of "Billy Clyde Tuggle" were what he enjoyed. Tuggle might have been a dirty rotten scoundrel at best, but dammit, sometimes you just had to like the guy in spite of yourself. When Billy Clyde left, so did dad....

I know my DH gets unhappy with me about all the time I spend reading blogs, but sometimes even he has to admit that it's not always time that's been "wasted".
Hmm, yours and mine both. I do, however, considering blogging to be an extended work activity. I learn a lot about science and scientists.
Candid Engineer, I was a mathematics major back in college. Started out in chemistry, got talked into switching over to chemical engineering, and ended up running screaming to the math dept. when I discovered how many physics classes I would be facing. Hand me a tesseract and I'll happily play with it. Deal with advanced physics or astrophyics? Not on your life! So what do I do these days? Absolutely nothing that makes use of my educational experience. *sigh* A friend has commented that I'm probably the most intelligent person in the building, which may be why I don't fit in. Dunno if I agree with him on that, but I appreciate the ego-boost! LOL
Anyway, I look at the blogs I read as continuing education as much as anything. I like reading bloggers who can teach me something, or at least challenge me to think. That's one reason I'm so glad I found your site!
