The ferroelectric materials found in today's "smart cards" used in subway, ATM and fuel cards soon may eliminate the time-consuming booting and rebooting of computer operating systems by providing an "instant-on" capability as well as preventing losses from power outages.
Go read the article. It's pretty cool. Then come back here if you will, I want to try something....
{interlude}
Okay, good, you're back. Now, I'd like for all you computer users to please stand up. You can sit back down if any of these apply to you:
- How many of you have been annoyed by the length of time it takes to boot your machine after a complete shut-down?
- How many of you have machines that take for-fucking-ever to get the OS to load; as in, you can go pour a cup of coffee and be back in time to see your home screen come to life?
- How many of you have lost data to an abrupt, unexpected, and/or inexplicable power failure? Extra points to those who have lost power due to any or all of: a little kid unplugging the computer or hitting the power switch as you scream NOOOOO!!!!! and lunge at them, thus spilling your coffee/tea/soda everywhere; tripping over your own power cord while attempting to get a retching cat off of wherever it's perched, before said cat can deposit a disgusting mass of semi-used cat food and soggy hair somewhere other than on the floor; your apartment complex's ONLY transformer blowing up for the umpteeth time because electrical demand out paces electrical supply when air conditioner season hits; a drunk driver knocking over a power pole - and blowing every transformer in the vicinity when the resultant energy surge from the massive short hits them; or squirrels in the substation - DRT* squirrel and substation.**
- How many of you have ground your teeth in frustration when your computer freezes, and you've lost EVERYTHING you were working on during the restart?
- How many of you have sworn to get a UPS because of any (or all) of the above, but somehow haven't managed to do it yet?
Instant-on and no power-outage data losses? Sign me up for that ASAFP!
*Dead Right There
**No shit, these are actual occurrences, many of which I've fallen victim to over the years.
