Seriously cool!

Yep, I'm a nerd.  I love science and technology.  I like to know the what and why and how of things.  But occasionally, there are times when I honestly don't care about the whats and whys and hows of a thing, the mere fact of its existence is enough:
A gamma-ray flare star 30,000 light years from Earth is putting on a remarkable show for NASA spacecraft. Highlights include ghostly x-ray "light halos" and eruptions packing more total energy than the Sun puts out in 20 years.
The article is here, and there's more on another soft-gamma-ray repeater here.  There are only six of them known in the entire universe.  Six!  How cool is that?!?
